I remember Sao Paulo public space as an organized chaos, loud and wild. Full of density and motion, it is a space of noise and cacophony, of motors and steps, of dances and traffic jams. More than 20 million people move on sidewalks with complex patterns, while 6.2 million cars flow on the open and smoggy urban veins. The city sounds like a race track.
The urban landscape of Sao Paulo emerges as multilayered collage, with a diversity and richness that can be re-discovered and experienced through the cinematic image, and the reproduction of its sound.
Drawing from a collection of videos captured in 2010, I would like to assemble a video art installation about Sampa, as the city is also known by its dwellers. This exhibit should allow the audience to get a sense of the Sao Paulo public space, its pace and tone, its rythm and chaotic harmony. Below is an initial selection of the raw video clips that I would like to use in this exhibit. They are presented in this post without any edit. For the installation they would be cut and looped so they can can create a continuous stream of movement. Since many of these shots were done with a handhold compact camera (Cannon G-10) many of them have shaky starts. Through editing process those kind of sections would be removed so the videos look steadier. For the sound, I would like to compose a piece using the source audio of the videos, and do some layering and synthesis process.
