I am a researcher, designer, and educator living in Bogota, Colombia, and working at the intersection of youth, technology,\u00a0 learning, and media ecosystems. In 2019 I joined the Department of Communication at Universidad Javeriana<\/a> as a professor\/researcher, after spending three years and half at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society<\/a>\u00a0 as a postdoc fellow. Previously I finished a PhD in Media Studies<\/a> at UT-Austin, and defended my dissertation<\/a> on Latino\/Hispanic immigrant youths digital media practices and assimilation into the U.S. I also completed an MSc in Comparative Media Studies <\/a>at MIT\u00a0 and majored with Literature<\/a> and Political Science<\/a> BAs from the Universidad de los Andes.<\/p>\n

I study how young people use technology for learning, creating, and participating in culture\/society\/economy, and the environments, communities, and market places where they interact. I am particularly interested in researching digital inequalities, citizenship, ICT (data, platforms, AI) policy\/governance, media ecosystems, and mis\/disinformation. My approach is interdisciplinary and collaborative, mixing qualitative, quantitative and computational methods, and applying co-design and research-creation.\u00a0 I teach methodology courses at undergrad and graduate levels on discourse and content analysis, social network analysis, ethnography, and digital methods.<\/p>\n

I design media and learning experiences. The past 20 years I have collaborated in the co-design of educational materials for youth, teachers, and librarians, including games, videos, curricula, and learning playlists. These tools are open access and freely available on the Digital Citizenship Resource Platform<\/a>, LRNG<\/a>,\u00a0the Project New Media Literacies<\/a> and DigiMente<\/a>. I also make sound, visual, text, and other kinds of media art. My artwork<\/a> has been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries such as the International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA) in Manizales, the Italo-Latin American Institute in Rome,\u00a0the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Art Gallery in Washington D.C, and the Humboldt Forum and Ethnological Museum in Berlin.<\/p>\n

Besides being an assistant professor at Universidad Javeriana,\u00a0 I am faculty associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society<\/a>, and a research associate with\u00a0the Centro ISUR<\/a>. In addition to my academic work, I serve as a consultant to international organizations, governments, and NGOs in projects related to digital inclusion, education, youth, and digital rights. I am also part of Clubes de Ciencia Colombia,<\/a> ScienteLab<\/a>, a member of\u00a0the Tierra Com\u00fan<\/a> network, the Connected Learning Alliance<\/a>, the global Network of Centers for Internet and Society<\/a>, Global Voices<\/a>, an advisor of the FRIDA program<\/a>, and a regular contributor to the English and Spanish Wikipedias<\/a>, the Wikicommons<\/a>, and OpenStreetMap<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9s se uni\u00f3 al departamento de comunicaci\u00f3n de la Universidad Javeriana<\/a> como profesor\/investigador en 2019.
